How to build your own document template
Why build a custom template?
The built-in templates cover common document types. But your business might need specific fields that aren't included. A custom template lets you extract exactly what matters to you.
Start from a built-in template
Go to the Templates page and find one that's close to what you need. Click "Customize" to make a copy in your account. This gives you a head start.
Add your fields
Each field has a name, a key, and a type. The name is what you see. The key is used in the API. The type tells the AI what kind of data to look for — text, number, date, currency, or yes/no.
Set required fields
Mark the fields that must be found in every document. Required fields help the AI know what's most important.
Test it out
Upload a document using your new template. Check the results. If a field isn't being found correctly, try adjusting the name or type. It usually only takes one or two tries to get it right.
